LipoedemaLipoedema is a very poorly understood condition, which is often mistaken for Lymphoedema or general obesity and cellulite. No amount of dieting will reduce the size of a limb with Lipoedema, as the fat is pathologically altered tissue. It is the amount of fat cells and not the size of the fat cells, which makes weight loss difficult. The exact cause of how the tissue becomes altered is not yet fully understood, but regular exercise helps to work the lymphatics. Water exercise, which helps to massage the lymphatic system, is especially effective. Lipoedema is frequently associated with women after puberty or after a significant hormonal event such as pregnancy. The areas most likely to be affected are the outside of the thigh, buttocks, lower abdomen and sometimes the arms. The feet and hands are usually unaffected. The affected area can often feel quite cool, be painful to the touch in advanced stages and can bruise easily. After many years, the body's lymphatic system can start to become tired and less effective. Correctly fitting compression garments can help the lymphatic system and prevent the condition worsening. Client testimonial:I had been feeling sluggish, tired and unable to lose weight for quite some time. I was also experiencing problems conceiving. I had recently had a knee operation and was concerned about the amount of swelling and fluid that had remained in my knee, making recovery slow. After reading an advertisement for MLD, I contacted Gayle in June 2007. I accessed a course of Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapy and after examining my legs, Gayle suggested that it was likely that I had Lipoedema. This would explain why I had been unable to loose weight particularly around my upper legs. A consultant specialising in Lymphoedema, Lipoedema and dermatological medicine subsequently confirmed this. He explained that Lipoedema is a poorly understood condition to which dieting makes no difference whatsoever. There is also a high incidence of knee problems affecting people with Lipoedema. MLD is currently the only treatment that will relieve symptoms. I have found it to be very helpful. It relieved all of the symptoms related to the Lipoedema and I began to feel less tired and sluggish. After seeing Gayle for around five months, I became pregnant and feel that the course of MLD therapy contributed to this. We now have a lovely little baby daughter who was born in July 2008.
