Manual Lymphatic Drainage: helping nature take its course

Lymphatic Fluids: their role in maintaining your health

What do Lymphatic Fluids do? Their key role is to:

  • Break down and destroy harmful substances (such as waste products, bacteria, viruses and cancer cells)
  • Transport nutrients, vitamins and hormones throughout the body
  • Strengthen the body's immune system through the production of white blood cells.
  • Eliminate excess fluid from the tissues.

The Lymph Nodes (Glands) (More info)

The lymph nodes are filtering stations for the body, removing toxic waste products from the lymph fluid. When disease occurs the lymph nodes become enlarged and sometimes painful. The main lymph nodes are situated within the neck, armpits, abdomen and groin. MLD is the most effective treatment for the control of Lymphoedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency. MLD can treat many symptoms:

  • Eliminates toxic build up and strengthens the immune system.
  • Assists all pre- and post-cosmetic surgery by reducing the healing time, reducing the pain, bruising and swelling.
  • Relieves many chronic conditions such as chronic sinusitis, chest infections and catarrh.
  • Relieves Irritable Bowel Syndrome and constipation.
  • Reduces Arthritic and rheumatic pain.
  • Alleviates symptom of ME.
  • Controls migraines.
  • Helps with skin disorders such as acne.
  • Helps reduce all forms of post-operative swelling.
  • Relieves stress, anxiety and tension.
  • Restores hormonal imbalances (puberty, pre- & post-pregnancy, menopause).
  • Relieves fluid congestion, such as puffy eyes and face; swollen legs and ankles; menstrual bloating; and pregnancy fluid retention.

A Natural Treatment

During your initial consultation, an explanation of the lymphatic system will be given and a thorough assessment will be made of the areas of the body that need to be treated. Gayle Olivia Longhurst will then be able to discuss with you the scope and frequency of the treatment you require.

Where applicable and provided your consultant gives consent, your treatment can be started as early as the day after surgery, during your stay in hospital. MLD is a medically recognised treatment. Many insurance companies will cover it for certain medical conditions: please check with your insurance company first.

The History of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

In the 1930s, Dr Emil Vodder developed his precise Manual Lymphatic Drainage procedure (MLD), after noticing that patients with chronic catarrh and sinus infections tended to have swollen lymph nodes.

Since Vodder's pioneering work began, MLD has been adopted throughout many European hospitals and clinics.
